Preservation & Volunteering

Protecting New England's Lights

Lighthouses are irreplaceable pieces of our maritime heritage. NELL works alongside preservation partners, government agencies, and dedicated volunteers to keep them standing for generations to come.

The Challenge

Why Preservation Matters

Of the more than 180 lighthouses that once dotted the New England coast, many face serious threats from coastal erosion, deferred maintenance, and changing ownership. Without active stewardship, these structures — some dating to the early 1800s — risk permanent loss. NELL channels member support directly into restoration grants, advocacy, and hands-on volunteer programs.
